How To Make Candied Orange Peel
Posted by admin on
Making candied orange peel was not my intention for the holidays, but it’s easy and less expensive than buying it pre-made.
The cool part is that this recipe is three recipes in one.
- Candied Orange Peel
- Orange Simple Syrup
- Granulated Orange Sugar
Today, I’m going to walk you through the simple process of how to make candied orange peel.
Types Of Homemade Candied Peel
Coincidently, you can use the same candy process to make other homemade citrus candied peel.
You can half or quarter the recipe if you don’t need to make as much as the candied orange peel recipe.
Ideally, you’re looking for a sugar-soaked and cooked citrus peel that is dried and rolled in granulated sugar.
Citrus fruits vary worldwide, so I looked online to see what I could find, although there are wide varieties.
- Candied Orange Peel
- Mandarin Orange Candied Peel
- Candied Lemon Peel
- Lime Candied Peel
- Candied Satsuma Peel
- Key-Lime Candied Fruit
- Candied Pomelo Fruit
- Kumquat Candied Fruit
- Candied Tangelo Peel
- Oroblanco Candied Peel
- Candied Yuzu Peel
- Lumia Candied Peel
- Palestine Sweet Lime
Making Candied Peel
If you’ve shopped for candied peel, you know how expensive it can be to buy a small package.
Over the years of living in Canada, I had yet to make a homemade Christmas Pudding recipe like my British mum and grandma used to make.
After contacting my mum, she gave me her recipe, and the plan is to see if I can successfully execute a similar product.
As I was purchasing the ingredients, I wanted to keep costs low since we’re on a budget.
Although we have a Christmas budget that includes the food, we need to stretch the money to ensure all costs are covered.
A big thanks to my mum for this candied orange peel and the Christmas pudding recipe.
Orange Flavoured Granulated Sugar
One of the most excellent parts about making this candied orange peel recipe is that you end up with orange granulated sugar.
Once the candied orange peel is dried, don’t throw away the sugar, as you can use it to make baked goods.
I poured the flavoured sugar into a zip bag until I planned to make muffins, cookies, or a cake.
Sweet Orange Simple Syrup
The second most remarkable part about making this candied orange peel recipe is that you get a simple golden orange syrup.
Once cooled, I poured the orange simple syrup into a clean mason jar and stored it in the refrigerator.
I did the same with the lemon simple syrup after I made candied lemon peel.
Poking holes into a homemade pound cake and drizzling the syrup over the top creates a cake like no other.
You can also use orange simple syrup to make orange chicken or other savory dishes.
Sugar-Free Candied Orange Peel
Although this is not a keto or low-carb option, all you do is swap out the granulated sugar and substitute it for an approved sugar.
For example, use 1/2 cup of Swerve granulated sugar substitute instead of one cup of granulated sugar.
Approved Keto Sweeteners
- Monkfruit
- Stevia
- Erythritol or Swerve
- Allulose double pack 400g each or a single package
- Sukrin Gold is the gold standard brown sugar for Keto
- Swerve Brown Sugar, granulated sugar, and powdered sugar
How To Make Candied Orange Simple Syrup
Many candied peel recipes eliminate citrus juice, but I don’t.
I’ve tweaked my mum’s recipe because it allowed me to make three recipes in one.
Once the oranges are peeled, and the water and sugar are in the pot, I add the orange juice.
It makes the candied citrus peel delightful and adds gorgeous golden colour to the simple syrup.
I did the same when I made the candied lemon peel for the Christmas pudding recipe.
Making Orange Granulated Sugar
After drying the candied orange peel for three days in the oven, the sugar is flavoured orange.
You’ve now created three recipes from one and saved a tonne of money.
