Glitter Pencils: DIY School Supplies Craft
My girl can never get enough glitter, so when she asked to glitter-ize her pencils for school this year, I was anything but shocked.
However, I was a bit stumped how I was going to make glitter pencils that didn’t end up covering her hands in glitter. (While I am very used to having a home that has traces of glitter everywhere – I knew her teacher may not appreciate trails of glitter in the classroom.)
We experimented with two methods to create these DIY Glitter Pencils – using loose glitter and a glitter washi tape.
Both methods worked really well for giving us a gorgeous glittered pencil – especially if you use a craft sealant like Mod Podge with the loose glitter method. The washi tape pencils I thought would give us issues with sharpening, but surprisingly the rice paper tape didn’t gum up Ella’s pencil sharpener. This may vary based on brand, so the loose glitter method may be the best bet.
This pencil craft is a great way to get kids excited for back to school, and they also double as a great DIY for little writers. My Ella is always writing out stories in her notebooks and is so excited whenever I come back from a work trip with a fancy new pen or notebook for her. She couldn’t wait to try out these DIY pencils as soon as they were dry.
You could also use this method on coloring pencils for a little artist.

Materials Needed to Make Glitter Pencils
- Standard No.2 Pencils
- Craft Paints, multiple colors
- Paint Brush
- Glitter or Glitter Washi Tape
- Permanent Marker, optional
- Craft Sealant

Tip: matching your glitter to an acrylic paint creates a more dramatic effect and makes the glitter coating look more complete. You can also buy colored pencils to use for this craft.
How to Make Glitter Pencils
Method One: Loose Glitter
Brush one coat of paint over each pencil and let dry.
Brush another coat of paint on each pencil and sprinkle glitter on some or all of the pencils.
Let them dry.
Seal the glitter in with a craft sealant like mod podge.
Method Two: Washi Tape
Starting at the end of the pencil with the eraser, place a long strip of glitter washi tape lengthwise down the pencil.
Smooth the tape down, covering the pencil completely.
Trim off excess washi tape. You may desire to seal with a bit of mod podge or other craft sealant.

Instructions
Method One: Loose Glitter
- Brush one coat of paint over each pencil and let dry.
- Brush another coat of paint on each pencil and sprinkle glitter on some or all of the pencils.

- Seal the glitter in with a craft sealant like mod podge.
