Sweet Potato Baby Food is a great place to begin when babies are starting solids. It can be enjoyed as a single vegetable baby puree or used in many baby-friendly recipes.

Why This Recipe Works

  • Orange Sweet Potato is a good source of Vitamin A and also provides babies with fiber, Vitamin C, Potassium and B Vitamins

Ingredients you will need

To make my Sweet Potato Puree for babies you will only need:

  • Sweet potato
  • Water
  • (optional) Cinnamon, Nutmeg
  • (optional) breast milk or baby formula.

Ingredients Notes & Substitutions

  • Sweet Potato: In New Zealand sweet potatoes are known as Kūmara
  • Orange Sweet Potato: When making sweet potato baby food I like to use orange-fleshed sweet potato or kūmara as is less starch than other varieties of sweet potato and therefore blends well into a very smooth and velvety baby purée.
  • Select firm, well-shaped kūmara/sweet potato with clean smooth skin, no soft spots and or any obvious signs of decay or wrinkling.

Step-by-step instructions

Prep: Peel and cube your sweet potato.

Step one: Place in a saucepan with water. Cover, with a lid, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes until the sweet potato are tender and can be squashed easily with a fork.

Step two: Drain, reserving the liquid.

Step three: Blend your sweet potato with the (optional spices if using) until a smooth texture is achieved, add liquid as needed to reach your desired consistency. The liquid used can be either the reserved liquid or a little breast milk or baby formula.

You can use either a blender or a food processor for this step.

Here is how you can make Sweet Potato Puree perfectly every time!

  • For a richer flavor you can bake the sweet potato in its skin on a baking sheet in the oven until tender, instead of cooking it with water on the stovetop.
  • Freeze portions of your sweet potato purée in ice cube trays or baby food trays.
  • Sweet potato purée is also a delicious side dish for a family meal, Once blended you can blend in a little butter or olive oil and season to taste with salt and pepper (please note that if you have salted your puree it is no longer appropriate as a first food for your baby.

Sweet Potato Puree

A simple sweet potato baby food recipe that can be used as a first food for babies or within baby food recipes to add natural sweetness.

Ingredients

  • 1 medium Sweet Potato 400g
  • 1 cup water

Optional

  • 2 Tablespoons Breast milk or baby formula
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg

Instructions

  • Peel and cube your sweet potato.
  • Place in a saucepan with water. Cover, with a lid, bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer for 15 minutes until the sweet potato are tender
